Johnny Canales
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johnny Canales is a former Tejano musician, and was host of the popular show titled "The Johnny Canales Show" which showcased up-and-coming bands from Mexico and the United States, including La Mafia, Selena, Mazz, Intocable, and Jennifer Pena. It aired on Televisa in Mexico and Univision in the United States from the mid-1980s until 1996. In 1997 he made the transition to The Telemundo Networks. The show only lasted 3 seasons on Telemundo. In 2002 Johnny Canales reached an agreement to bring the show back to its original home The Televisa Networks, and to start touring again doing shows in the Southwest part of The United States and Mexico. In 2005 the show was taken off the air, leading to an outcry by the Hispanic community for the loss of the show.
November 13, 2006
Dear Commander Morales:
This letter is to revisit the resolutions ratified at the American GI Forum of the United States National Conference (2006). Specifically, the Johnny Canales Resolution:
#10. Resolution to direct that the American GI Forum of the United States enter into a dialog with NBC Universal and Telemundo representatives on behalf of the Hispanic community to ensure that more diversity is provided at all levels of the entertainment field, which includes programming reflective of the entire community, including the retention of long-time Hispanic entertainment personalities and other employees facing layoffs as a result of the acquisition of Telemundo television by NBC Universal. Of particular concern is the pending actions against long-time Hispanic personality, Tejano music icon, and veteran, Mr. Johnny Canales, and other mostly Hispanic Telemundo television employees.
Resolution #10 passed and the Resolutions Committee recommended adoption. There was much discussion including recommendations to petition sister civil rights and other Hispanic organizations into joining the AGIF in support of this petition and if necessary; directing the boycotting of Telemundo and NBC Universal Television and the products they endorse. The Resolution was brought to a vote and the membership approved the resolution and directed the executive board to take action to make the intent of this important resolution known to the appropriate offices or individuals. (This resolution was submitted by National Civil Rights Director Joe A. Ortiz of Texas). (Secretary’s recommendations – For National Commander to direct Civil Rights director to determine what local NBC/Telemundo affiliate community relations area officer can be contacted to establish issues dialog.
With this being reiterated, and as Telemundo has remained indifferent to our concerns, we must follow through on our commitments written in the above resolution. There should be no compromise. Financial considerations have no place usurping our steadfastness as a unified civil rights organization. So the question is, will we honor our commitment and follow through or will we allow our written resolutions to be ignored and our influence as the Veteran's Civil Rights Champion to endure such disrespect. Will we stand idle or will we mobilize? Remember Coors, we won that battle and we will win this one as well. Additionally we have the support of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus.
This letter can be found at

Respectfully,
Joe A Ortiz
National Civil Rights Director

There are alot of TV shows that are canceled by all different TV stations. What's the difference.? Mr. Canales just has to find other avenues to make a living. Telemundo was just doing what they thought was best for their station and life goes on. Like you say Mr. Canales "You got it! Take it away!

"Canales' reputation with his viewers and in the music industry is dependent on the show...", does this mean he really believed he would be able to do this show forever? For the rest of his days? Not even Johnny Carson or Bob Barker were vain enough to want to do their shows until their last breath. He should let it go and enjoy his retirement, forced or not.
I don't know if he's hurting for money, but there's got to be some assets around he could sell. If his lifestyle is so elaborate he needs to downgrade. Freddy Fender lived very simply, he took care of his family and friends and was a happy man til the end of his days. Canales should take a page out of his book. If anything ruins Canales' reputation it is going to be this lawsuit. He needs to let this go and move on to other things.

Johnny just like the Army your tour of duty with Telemundo has ended and its time to "take you away. " Give thanks to God and Domingo Peña that you ever got a show in the first place, Domingo thought you every thing you know but you never thanked him, one thing you did not pick up from him is humility or generosity, because he at least helped "la gente".

Perhaps some of the friends he blew his money on can give him a handout.

I know Johnny. He is a friend. Nothing to do with show biz, nothing to do with money. He has never annoyed but on the contrary is quite personable. The lawsuit is because the network lured him away from Univision because he was one of the "load bearing columns". Subsequently, he found out the above information. The network Telemundo consists of executives who would burn their own mother to achieve. Johnny is a millionaire many times over, this is about pay back. This lawsuit precipitates many an executive being fired. Numerous Telemundo affiliates and their employees are in support of this man. This lawsuit demands $100 million but innately it will be a litmus test for corporate America and their "culturally correct" community affairs programs. This is true you will learn in the next few years.
All Johnny asks, is for them to explain WHY.
For some reason, the question has been asked many times but Telemundo cannot answer.
And for the record his show was not on my favorites list but the man deserves for his contract to be honored as does anyone else who makes a binding agreement. Just because I am bigger than you does it mean I can breach a contract with you?

If I remember correctly the first time he complained publically about Telemundo was that they didnt like the type of bands he was promoting.
It sounded like Telemondo was a little racist against those bands.
Perhaps they wanted more natural blond blue/green eyed Mexicans. Not the dark complexion.

I guarantee that he will retire after he wins or not. Time to get in new faces. He has done his deed for our community. If he wants 100 million, which I think is absurd, then if his fans are that important to him, then when and if he wins, give the money to his fans!

About a year ago Johnny Canales tried to get LULAC to support a boycott of Telemundo because Canales claimed he was being discriminated against because of his Mexican origin. This request was shelved. LULAC said they wanted to wait until Canales negotiations were over with Telemundo. I guess they are over now!

Well like everyone else says, big time "Lawsuit Abuse"!! He has nothing better to do and anyways most of his shows were like the Domingo show, they never realy sing, just lip sing!! Then to top it off, his wife Nora, gimme a break, that woman cant speak right much less host something, get rid of her!! Now Johnnys on the public access channel, just as annoying and still makes no sense as does his wife!! Goodbye Johnny and Nora, have a grrrreat life!

I dont think this thing will ever get to court. As for being frivolous, we must look at the reason for bringing it to the Court.
Breaches of contract are a viable reason to sue if the parties cannot come to terms. All Johnny has requested was for the Telemundo executives to tell him why? Since they cannot answer, the only way else is to bring the executives in and depose them. Make them fight with one another.
It is not about him getting back on the air; there are networks all over the country paying to broadcast the reruns. I dont see Johnny asking anybody for anything; but I do believe he has tremendous support in South Texas as well as nationwide and in Congress. LULAC & the American GI Forum have both adopted resolutions to Boycott Telemundo and it's advertisers. One conflict for the National LULAC is that Telemundo is a big contributor on the national level, our local chapters realize zero.
For the waterloon, please explain to me how a breach of contract lawsuit is "big time "Lawsuit Abuse"!! "?
The dollar amount will be up to the jury but it did get everyone's attention.
Right?
As far as lip sync, that is what you were referring to, right? Johnny has been the Ed Sullivan of Tejano music. Selina, that girl can sing; whether it was real or it was memorex I cannot say conclusively; but it was her voice regardless. If you dont like the show then change the channel, but I think the operative word would be ENVY.
Johnny and Nora are having a great life and there is more to come so stay tuned or change the channel.
Anybody who thinks the litigation is about $$$$$$$$$$ or about Johnny getting back in the spotlight are sorely mistaken.
Any who knows Robert Heil, knows he mostly is about Human (civil) Rights, that is the type of law he pursues. Arthur is accurate in his statement about Telemundo as they are being selective and the executives had a personal and political agenda in bringing in the merengue carribean style music. This is in the negation of true Tejano Democrats of South Texas in exchange for nurturing the Cuban Socialist Propaganda within the Telemundo International structure; however, the advertising dollars come from the United States of America. This thing is much, much bigger than Johnny Canales. You will see. Do the research and you will begin to understand what I speak of.

Since when do others dictate when a man retires?
Johnny was a singer before he was on TV.
He sounds great.
I just heard him sing the other night.
Tell us, what is your interest in a man retiring or remaining?
If one does not like the show, change the channel.
I think Johnny enjoys giving our youth the opportunity to come on television and show their talent.

If Johnny Canales was so popular, Telemundo wouldn't have pulled the plug on the show. Also, if he was really that popular, another tv station would've snatched him up in a hurry, perhaps in a similiar format.

First of all Johnny was locked into a contract. IMO, Johnny should have accepted another offer and then it would have been Telemundo filing suit.
It is SOP in some industries to purchase the rights to something they never intend to go forward with. A few examples of this:
oil industry / auto industry - How many patents have been purchased from inventors in the interest of not using them. Say like maybe a carburetor that can get 100 or 200 mpg or an Auto safety device that will cost too much to include but they don't want another company to acquire it either.
A book that reveals too much. I have possession of one such book purchased by the richest diocese in the world and it was never published. Think, if the church could have purchased the Da Vinci Code book before it was published? If they would have purchased it do you think it would have been censored or published?
Mike Tyson, remember when he was knocking everyone out in the first round? What was it doing to the industry and the gambling industry? The fights were too short, the odds were one sided the networks were losing in advertising. It is like when a sports series of 7 games is over in 4 or 5 games.
There is a political agenda, it has nothing to do with ratings or popularity. The music of South Texas has proved very influential in it's ascension. Johnny successfully promoted Tejano music which conflicted with merengue, both types of music promoted a public policy ideology. Now, where is a Tejano Music launching pad like the one we had in the Johnny Canales show. The Merengue is more sex than music, Telemundo wanted to quash the rumble in South Texas. And we wonder why we don't have a law school or a Medical School below San Antonio.
Why did they want to buy our beach?
To take it away from us?
Why did Telemundo want to buy the Johnny Canales Show from Univision?
To take it away from South Texas?
To censor South Texas?
It is not about Johnny.

Well Mr. King Alonzo, either your Johnny or your awefully close to him to know his whole bio!!!!! So why wait soo long to do this, why not do it right away?? As far as for Mr. Heil, any lawyer will take a case to make a quick buck regardless of who they are, beleive me i know!!! Yea JOhnny was a singer but a bad one, I guess you must be from his time, cause surely if you think he still sounds great youv'e got a hearing problem!!!! Then to call Johnny the Tejano of Edd Sullivan, my god, are you NUTS!!!! He is not even close to that!!! Domingo Pena was more like him then Johnny will ever be!! Exactly if you dont like the man change the channel, and to change the subject a bit, if you dont like the new Westside mall, then dont go!!!! Thats for those haters of the new mall!!!!

Waterloon,
I am not Johnny, but thank you for the compliment. I know Johnny, we have discussed this issue and at first I thought the Boycott Telemundo thing was sour grapes and Johnny wanted to be back on Television. After reading my comments in whole maybe you will understand.
Hate is not a good thing. The Westside Commons? I suppose that you have your panties in a wad over that issue also? I support the new Westside Commons development although the developer has not the communities interest in his heart. I support it for this quadrant of the community and it will prosper as the other businesses have prospered.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it does not matter if you or I believed Johnny could sing; somebody thought he could. Johnny Canales is my friend. I dont know the agreement between Johnny and Mr Heil but I do know most Attorneys wouldn't touch this litigation against the Media Goliath for any amount of money and the chances of a quick pay day are slim. I concur with your sentiments about lawyers.
Johnny's voice & sound is not the voice of Selina or the sound of Intocable and even Jennifer Pena is more entertaining in my eyes but Johnny helped launch these careers and many more. He is the Ed Sullivan of Tejano Music and Domingo may have fit the role moreso; but when Johnny brought talent onto his show they prospered. An outlook of possibility and confidence appeared on the World of Tejano Music. We had little girls aspiring to be Selina and we had little boys learning to play instruments with the belief that they can become an artist like Freddy Fender or form a band and rise up from nowhere like intocable.
Now, i have an individual who self proclaims to be a water loon telling me that "I am NUTS!"?
Well that is why we live in Nueces County.
And if you ever do go to the Westside Commons, I recommend leaving the attitude at home.
Domingo, he was before his time just like a football player by the name of Deacon Jones. Deacon Jones didnt make big bucks and has virtually no retirement salary but he was one of the most influential men setting the tone for the NFL today. "Jones coined the term "sack" now commonly used to describe the tackling of the passer behind the line of scrimmage."

No offense intended but there are segments(people) in the South Texas Latino culture that seemed to be born jealous.
When Selena left this world and her father picked Jennifer Pena to guide, the overwrought jealousy began. So much so they booed Jennifer Pena. Pena was never intended to be a replacement for Selena.
I am ignorant as resmithny420 states. But, at least (fromdd) and kingalonzoalverezdepineda13 know of what I speak.
Being jealous at every little thing is no way to go, hente's. Remember the line spoken in the movie "Selena" about Mexicans hhaving to work harder to be accepted in anglo society.

Did Johnny betray you?
How?
Skeletons in the closet?
Put up or shut up.
And make sure you can prove it.
Tell us something we don't know and remember those who live in glass houses should not throw rocks.
I know there are some skeletons maybe even criminal skeletons of the Telemundo Executives that are beginning to creep out.
I believe "the truth will make you free".
Breach of Contract is a legitimate legal issue for the Court System to adjudicate.
Telemundo failed to hold their end of the contract.
Talk to us JJ, you sound hurt, like you have been waiting to get this out of your system. Go for it, blast away.

aqualoon:
Your defamatory comments about Nora Canales are not within the rules set forth for participation on this message board. As a result, I have requested your first posting on this thread be removed.
You obviously do not know or have ever met Nora Canales. I know her personally, and I can honestly say a more decent woman, wife and Mother you'll never find. And as for your comments on communication skills, judging from your postings, your misspelled words and malapropisms make it crystal clear you don't exactly use the King's English yourself. (Note: I know they sound the same, but there's actually a pretty significant difference between the words "then" and "than." Check it out and get back to me, ok?)
This lawsuit should be decided on the merits of Johnny's claims, and whether or not his claims are meritorious will be decided by a judge and/or a jury. Personal attacks, especially on people you've obviously never met, have no place in this discussion.
Lastly, you know less about the legal system than you do about the Canaleses. No lawyer I know will throw good money after bad. It's a new day in the legal community--the heyday of the plaintiff's claim is over. No lawyer worth his or her salt wants to be associated with the filing of a frivolous lawsuit. When a lawyer loses the respect of judges and colleagues, it's time to choose another profession.

i remember growing up seeing the johnny canales show,, my abuela and her sister who raised me used to watch this show more religously then attending church, he was really too much like ed sullivan , i dont think the lawsuit is abuse, its a slap in the face to a company that refuses to acknowledge its actions, and refuse to give explanations for their actions.

JJ,
You were the one who spoke of skeletons and of betrayal. It a door opened by you. I must disagree with your opinion of the genre that Johnny advocated. I truly enjoy the music of many of the artists who appeared on his stage. You are entitled to your opinion and your comments in inference were about you. As for the 100 million fans, I dont see why this irritates so many, it was a highball figure, exaggeration whatever but I never took it as a serious statement but one tossed out there to taunt the network executives. I have never witnessed such envy turned to hate and bitterness as I have the last couple of days. It is hard to understand how one can side with a huge corporate network that is buying (accumulating) stations so as to dictate the message we receive; how one sides against a little person. Anyway, I'll talk to you later as I have got a "100 million things to do" before morning.

You cant say it any better than that.

What does that hve to do with Telemundo not honoring the contractual agreement?
Or did it just make you feel good to put somebody down?

I agree with kewl charger, these people think that they can sign you to a contract and then use it to treat you like crap.
When the deed is revealed they act like aqualoon and his multiple personalities palambo who probably is the cucuy who i totally refused to be scared of even when I was little.
But if I were Johnny & Nora, I would amend the lawsuit to 500 million now!

Let's see in the 1940's the blacks came out with the zoot-suit which was imitated rather quickly by certain Latino boys.
In the 2000's the blacks came out with clothing fashions from prison's lack of belt policy imitiated by guess who?
Then the blacks came out with sometimes vulgar or senseless hip-hop imitated by certain Latino boys.
I wonder where the musicians who play that (get up and dance) cantina music got their stuff. Who are they imitating?

Some of "vendido gente" are so used to being jaivitas that they actually believe the Lawsuit abuse brainwashing TLR legislation.
Routine hernia removal results in you waking up from surgery only to tell you one of your balls were removed by mistake.
And you can't sue because medically as the doctor states "You only need one."
Don't worry if the doctor actually cuts one of your balls off during surgery......TLR and the Insurance will make sure YOUR legislator are well compensated to insure they only pay max of 250k.
TLR 101~
After the 40% the lawyers take (if they take your case) off the top you still have to pay the medical bill for the "services" without any "confession of error".
So how much did you get?
250k-40%(attorney fees)=$100,000......now how much are your bills?
And why must you pay for watt they did wrong?

I enjoyed watching "The Johnny Canales Show" back when he had Tejano Music such as Old La Mifa, Old Mazz, and many others. I also enjoyed his free concerts for the food bank, back school, others to help the community.
Then he started to take his show to the Mexican Market and I lost interest in show because of the music he was promoting.
Telemundo places newscaster on leave over her affair with L.A. mayor
Associated Press
Friday, July 6, 2007
LOS ANGELES — Spanish-language network Telemundo has placed a newscaster on leave while it investigates whether her romantic relationship with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa breached journalistic ethics, TV station KVEA said Thursday.
The Telemundo affiliate announced the probe two days after Villaraigosa, whose wife has filed for divorce, acknowledged he had been in an extramarital affair with newswoman Mirthala Salinas for about a year.
"We will conduct this investigation with the utmost respect to personal privacy and journalistic standards," said Manuel Abud, the station's general manager.
The mayor's office had no comment, Villaraigosa spokesman Sean Clegg said.
Salinas said in a statement that she would cooperate with the investigation. She said, "I am confident that when all the facts are analyzed it will be clear that I conducted myself in an appropriate way."
Salinas once covered the mayor as a political reporter. Telemundo took her off the political beat about 11 months ago after she disclosed her relationship to station management, the mayor has said.
Still, as the station's news anchor, Salinas read an on-air report last month on the mayor's separation from his wife. At the time, Villaraigosa declined to say whether he was involved with another woman.
"It's a little late, but good for them," said Kelly McBride, ethics group leader at the Poynter Institute, a journalism foundation in St. Petersburg, Fla.
McBride said the station should bring in an outside expert to help conduct a probe. She said it should have been conducted when station managers first learned of her involvement with the mayor.
Any investigation must also ask what role her managers played, McBride said.
"The investigation should include not just what stories did she influence, but who knew and when did they know and what were their decisions," McBride said.
Since confirming his romantic relationship with Salinas at a news conference Tuesday, Villaraigosa has all but disappeared.
The famously ubiquitous mayor had no public appearances on July Fourth. He even skipped the official opening of New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign headquarters in Los Angeles, even though he is a national co-chair of the Democrat's campaign.
He had no events Thursday, and is not expected to appear in public until next week.
The mayor "deserves a few days' vacation during a holiday week to attend to personal and family matters," Clegg said.
